What’s Cooking; Queen’s Tandoor

Queen’s Tandoor - Seminyak - BaliQueen’s Tandoor is located in Seminyak’s main street, Jl. Raya Seminyak. We arrived around 12:00 pm or so. It was a lunch that I will not soon forget. First of all; you get a welcomed Indian feeling by its decoration, which is a blend of a rich Indian colonial style.

We were directed upstairs and sat down at a table directly next to the window, enjoying a view of the ever-busy Jl. Raya Seminyak. When the manager came to our table to take our drink order he asked what we would like to have as a drink to start our lunch. I was thinking, “would it be a beer or something really typical Indian?”. I might get beer anywhere else (although due to the recent alcohol importing problems in Bali, beer will probably run out in a few moments), but something Indian is a different story.

I knew about this kind of Indian tea with milk most Indian restaurants I’ve been to offered as a welcome drink, but here at Queens Tandoor it was something different; we got the perfect tasty Mango Lassi drink served in a nice shiny silver cup. The manager has told us that most Indian people love to have their foods burning spicy and their desserts super sweet. The dishes at Queen’s Tandoor are mild – not too much or less spicy and desserts are not too sweet, not too plain, so that makes the taste just perfect!

The menu at Queens Tandoor covers the enormous number of 180 dishes, which is probably the biggest menu I’ve ever seen. You can find anything on there except for pork and beef. This is because of religious reasons. I made up my mind and ordered two huge pieces of crispy Indian sort of tortilla sprinkled with paprika, onions, chili powder & fresh lemon juice. My appetizer was served with mint/coriander, mango and some fruits & onions in a red sauce on the side.

My friend enjoyed the starters of the Sheekh Kebab Lamb and chicken & fish all seasoned in Tandoori. They were a brilliant combination with the sauces that got served before and of course with the main course itself.

Our main course existed of 3 different kinds of meats, which were all prepared in three separate sauces. Some of them were made in the traditional Indian curry sauce. There was one dish that was made of grated spinach that got served not with meat, but with goat cheese and potatoes instead.

As a side dish we had yellow rice and flat Indian crispy bread. I just love to dip the bread into one of the sauces – so tasty!

At the end I was pretty excited for the dessert: sizzling brownies on a hot plate, the waiter pored liquefied sugar on top of it, which turned up in smoke for a few seconds which caramelized the whole plate. That was something you won’t see everyday!

All in all, if you like Asian or Indian food, then this is for sure the place to be. I didn’t have a spectacular lunch like this for a while. Queens Tandoor is both open for lunch and dinner from 11:00 am to 11:30 pm on Jl. Raya Seminyak.
