What’s Cooking; Café Sendok

cafe_sendokOne of the most popular streets in Bali is Jalan Legian; the long main road that leads to Kuta on one side and Seminyak on the other. This street is loaded with shops and restaurants and is obviously a great spot for the tourist to wander around on.

One of the restaurants located on Jalan Legian is the old time favorite Café Sendok (sendok = spoon). Whenever we walk or drive by this place it is always lively. Happy tourists are sitting at the bar, enjoying a cold Bintang beer or sitting at the tables, chatting and laughing about their adventures. Though this place is German oriented, the tourists are from every corner of the world. I guess this is because the restaurant looks inviting.

So this time I get to be that happy tourist (again). Though living in Bali feels like a permanent holiday, somehow you just don’t hang around in the tourist areas that often anymore.

Café Sendok is located on the busy Legian street. It’s always fun to just sit at a table and watch the hectic surroundings over a cold drink. So that’s exactly what we did. The kind owner, Andreas Menzel, decided to supply us with the most popular dishes; Nasi Campur, German Sausage, Sate Ayam (chicken), Snapper and Surf & Turf (Grilled beef fillet steak and seafood). It all sounded so great; so the discussion about who’s eating what began immediately.

All the dishes looked well presented. The Nasi Campur (rice mix) was very diverse and it is the perfect dish for those who want to try Indonesian food but don’t know what to order. The German Sausage was also really tasty; there was no difference in taste from traditional German sausages that you can get in Europe.

The Chicken Sate was presented on a small table-barbeque. The way it should be! While the menu said “Baby Snapper”, the Snapper turned out to be pretty big. Enough for someone with a normal appetite. The Surf and Turf is one of the more pricey dishes on the menu, but the value is good. This dish consists out of a juicy peace of beef fillet (200 gr.) and a fair amount of Prawns (100 gr.).

After this satisfying meal we enjoyed another drink and observed the place a bit. The waiting staff consists of kind and pretty girls who love to joke with the customers. Due to this, the atmosphere in Café Sendok is friendly and inviting. The interior is colorful and because it’s open air, you can enjoy the feeling of Legian from every table.

Round Up:
Café Sendok is a popular spot for tourists that are walking around Legian and want to have a cold drink or a satisfying meal in a lively and friendly environment. The menu is German focused, but they have a diverse menu where you can also order Indonesian or other European dishes.
