Clean Bali Series

by THE MAG

Baru di Bali introduces THE HEART OF BALI to give a voice to Bali based charities and non-profit organizations to introduce themselves to our thousands of monthly readers in order to create awareness for their charitable programs and projects in Bali. Each month we invite another organization to answer a series of questions portraying their mission, accomplishments and future objectives.

1. What is your organization and what does it do?

Clean Bali Series is an environmental education organization. We are a not for profit organization that has and continues to publish a series of hard back, full color illustration, children’s environmental books in three languages (Bahasa Indonesia, Balinese and English). The books focus on the pollution problems of the different areas of the island of Bali (beach, rice fields and mountains) and of Indonesia as a whole. The books are distributed free of charge to schools, educational programs and environmental organizations.

2. What is the purpose of the “Clean Bali Series”?

Our purpose is to bring attention to the pollution problems here in Bali and Indonesia and also the world. Provide information, basic education and an understanding of these pollution problems and their causes, as well as possible solutions to them. To prepare this generation and future generations through our efforts, to be better prepared for and be able to make educated and informed decisions when dealing with present and future pollution issues.

3. What are your short term goals?

Our short term goals are to continue publishing and distributing the two books that we have published ("Penyu and Lumba-lumba" / “Turtle and Dolphin” and "Burung Camar dan Kokokan" / “Seagull and Heron") as well as finish the third book in the series (due to be finished in April of 2010). We are also in the finishing stages of printing a two language paper back teacher’s guide with information and lesson plans to accompany the three books in the series. We are in the process of recording and publishing the environmental songs found in our books. We hope to be able to distribute and use this medium to express our message and concerns about the pollution problems here in Indonesia and the world.

4. What are your long term goals?

We would like to expand our environmental children’s book series and programs to the other islands of Indonesia. Our other series of books (e.g. ”Clean Java Series”) would follow the same format as the Clean Bali Series and discuss pollution problems and solutions specific to those islands . We would continue to utilize the individual languages and traditions of the different islands to help enhance the learning process and to maintain individual cultural identities.

5. Has your organization made or is it making any progress in achieving it’s goals?

Yes! Here are a few examples (our website www.cleanbaliseries.org  has a full list of activities):

Clean Bali Series has distributed over 3,000 copies of the first and second books for free to various schools and organizations located throughout Indonesia. They have sold an additional 1,000 copies of the first book with the proceeds from sales funding about 30% of the printing costs of the second book. Clean Bali Series is working with and supporting the Yayasan GUS of Kuta, Bali in the distribution and use of our books in their environmental education programs in Bali.

6. Have your actions made any significant changes in line with the goals and missions of your organization?

Yes! In that our actions have only strengthened our resolve and commitment to follow through with the goals that we originally started with and to further expand our programs in several new directions. The response to our books has only further proven that people on a whole are concerned with the environmental problems we are all facing now and willing to become involved in finding solutions to them.

7. Final thoughts:

“We have only one earth and only one chance to make right the wrongs we have committed, so let's not blow it, shall we”
